LinkedIn impact on my carreer path
I have been a member on LinkedIn since April 4th 2008, but up until now, it’s just served as another social media placeholder where I put little or no content or work into.
Last year, that changed. I left the company that I had built because I wanted to take a new carreer path. I started growing my profile without sharing too much content or taking part in the discussions on the site. So I combed through everything I had written about myself. And added contacts. A lot. And I mean a LOT! Usually I don’t add people on social media I don’t know, but on LinkedIn, there is another vibe going. I don’t remember anyone denying my contact request, ever.
And all that effort worked out great! I got some new opportunities, had some challenging interviews with exciting companies and decided to take up a role as a Technical Manager with Origo in Iceland.
Although that position did not work out, the work I had put into LinkedIn last year came into good use when I decided to embark on a freelancing carreer. I decided to write an article here on Medium which would serve as some sort of a CV for me. I then wrote a personal message to about 400 individuals linking to that article and trying to express the values that I can bring and just getting the conversation going.
And man, oh, man … did that work out better than I had hoped. A lot of people did not write anything back (and that’s ok), but most replied, even if they had no opportunities for me. But a significant part of the messages were engaging and had me booking meetings for a whole week, meeting up and having frank and open discussions about what I can bring to the table.
I was really surprised at all this feedback I got. The positivity, the opennness, the pats on the back really surprised me, and made me feel even more sure that the path I was trying to create for myself was the right one.
Oh, and I have 3 contracts on the table already … justsayin’ :)
